The church where my dad pastors, Fountain Park, is doing something very unique for Advent. They are celebrating Advent by thinking about Christmas from the viewpoint of women. I was really impressed with this idea when I heard about it. I really think they are making bigger strides than they may even realize.

It's so hard for me to understand why so many churches and Christian communities have such a hard time with women. It often seems they just don't know what to do with us. Throughout so much of history the woman's place was in the home caring for their family. But throughout the latter half of the 19th century women moved out of this role more and more. We moved into the working world, held careers outside of the home and helped society to see that women can hold other roles too. But the church still hasn't figured out what to do with this. There are, of course, those denominations and groups that strongly believe the Bible speaks against women in leadership and/or ministry roles in the church and I'm not even thinking about them. More so, I'm thinking about how so much of our Christianity and our teaching is from a male perspective. I really think it's hard for women to know what to do with that and I think the church is still figuring out what to do with women who are strong outside of the home and continue to be strong in the home doing what God has called them to do in both situations.

What I do love seeing is that so many women aren't afraid to be who they are. Whether that be a stay-at-home mom or a woman who finds herself in the workforce outside the home. Because I strongly believe that both are valid options! No woman is the same and there aren't cookie-cutter ways to live our lives!

I promise I'm not always so whiny about topics like this.
